This month we are celebrating our oldest getting glasses. While his eyes may need some help from some super specs, we are happy that he can see things a little more clear. To help celebrate my mom made him the coolest cupcakes. She is so creative! These were a big hit.

This Just In...
Another stash busting project is all done and in use. YEAH! For this project I knit up the super fast and fun Spring Beret by Natalie Larson. While the weather is warming, the mornings are still on the chilly side. Or more realistically, I just don't have the time in morning to get myself looking proper for the day. This hat solves all that! I used Rowan's summer tweed yarn. The yarn has a lovely texture and is made from cotton, which keeps the hat nice and light. I feel this yarn keeps things in tune with the season. The pattern was easy to knit, but interesting enough so you did not get board.
I love to throw this on in the mornings. Run the kids to school, run some errands, and it stays in place. You gotta love a hat that actually functions like it should. This could be the start of a beret knitting frenzy!

Summer Lovin'
Lately I have been thinking about summer living. What does that mean to us? It is hard to have those lazy summer days when you have 2 young ones running around. I have been inspired by the picnic blanket found on Sew Mama Sew. I am thinking of some of the fabrics from above to use in that project. To take a blanket to the park, beach, or just to sit in the backyard would be great! I also am in love with the book Weekend Sewing by Heather Ross. She has so many great ideas for sewing projects. I would love to make the trapeze sundress, but change the dress part into just a top. Cool, easy, and light. Great to throw on and go.
My mind is reeling with thoughts and ideas about summer. Fresh foods, soft fibers for yarns, and light fabrics for sewing.

Going Gardening
We made it! The family loaded up the car and headed out to the greenhouse to stock up on plants, flowers, and VEGGIES! The goal this year is to have a modest salsa garden in containers. After much research and trying to be "real" about we could accomplish this summer, the container garden idea seemed like a good place to start. We are going to have peppers, jalapenos, onion, tomatoes, herbs, and for an experiment we are trying pumpkins and peas. We shall see how it all turns out. Personally I am looking forward to fresh tomatoes and basil.
The kids are very excited about growing the pumpkins. They love fall and the idea of getting to carve something that grew in their yard is very cool! Now that we have been to the greenhouse, the next step is getting it all planted and ready for summer!

The Rainbow Connection
It seemed appropriate to finish up these happy and bright socks just in time for spring. The leaves are finally on the trees, the flowers blooming, and my Broadripple socks are DONE! I have been stuck in a sock knitting rut. I was knitting plain ol' stockinette stitch socks ALL the time. I discovered all of these beautiful patterns on Ravelry and my impulse to try something new became immediate. This pattern was very enjoyable to knit. I did not need to make any modifications. It had instructions on how to knit them on 2 circular needles (yeah!) and the pattern was easy to memorize. The yarn is Noro's Kureyon sock yarn. It was given to me by my lovely sister. As with any Noro yarn, the colors are beautiful and it is fun to watch them change as you knit.
The lace pattern is very pretty and perfect for this time of year. We still have our chilly mornings and evenings here in Michigan. A little splash of something bright makes for a wonderful way to chase away those spring showers!

Busting the Stash
I posted last week about getting through some works in progress. So I decided that also means busting through some of those long standing projects that have been on my mind. I have a stash of vintage pillowcases that I was not sure what to do with. I also have been wanting to make something from the great sewing book Simple Sewing by Lotta Jansdotter. I decided that with this past Mother's Day celebration, these fun aprons would be a great way to surprise some mom's I know. The pattern is very simple and you can make so many modifications to personalize it. I just kept is simple to really let the funky floral pattern show off. These are nowhere near as cute as the aprons over on Carrie's blog, but a little recycle project never hurts!

WIP'S
It would seem that I have a few works in progress laying around right now. I really must finish them up before starting out on something new. They sit there and taunt me, looking at me with unfinished seams and hems. "Just a few more rows to knit and then your all done!" they say. But for some reason I cannot muster the enthusiasm to finish. In my mind, I have moved on to the next project. Maybe the finishing fairy will come along and do it for me?? No, these next couple of weeks are all about getting those projects done. New yarn has come to me that is calling to be knit up. A couple more sewing projects need to get done first before moving onto others. It is time to "spring clean" the craft projects!

24K clapotis
She is finished and I love it!! I feel like the last person in the world to make the clapois scarf, but I did it. The color is fantastic. I used bamboo yarn from the South West Trading Company. Nice and light for the summer, but the color will go all year long. I really enjoyed using something a little different for summer, bamboo was a good choice. So happy to finally start wearing it!

Summer Skirt Part 2

The summer skirt revolution continues. Found the fabric at my local fabric store. It is a beautiful print by Robert Kaufman. The skirt was made using Simplicity pattern 7229. This pattern is a staple for me. It is a simple drawstring skirt or pant pattern. I have made both skirts and Bermuda length shorts using the pattern in the past. I like the drawstring waist. It gives the skirt a different look, but is still super comfortable and casual to wear. Which is great when chasing the kids around all summer!!
