The Garden Is Giving

Last night our family went to our community garden. Much to our surprise and joy, we discovered our little plot was giving up LOTS of goodies. We took home flowers, tomatoes, and small amount of beans and beets. I am so excited about the 'matoes. The big ones are not quite ready yet, but the Roma's and Grape tomatoes are starting to give. There is nothing like fresh food from the vine. This year I went with Heirloom plants and already I have started to dry seeds for next year. I also think the seeds will make excellent gifts for friends. Seriously, how could you not enjoy the colors of red, orange, purple, and yellow?!

Being back home has given me the crafty bug, and the kids are in need of some fun projects as well. Time Out

We are on a little vacation. The internet is not availale to us where we are staying. However, I have been able to enjoy the lovely library up here where the internet is indeed alive. I love a library that has a very LARGE fireplace to enjoy. So there will be not posting right away. I know I am due with some new entries. They are coming. In the meantime we are fishing, roasting food over an open flame, listening to the sounds of birds, and working on some much needed family time! Hope you are enjoying your summer as well.

New Knit Skirt

Summer is here! The kiddos are all finished with school for the season and we had some record heat the last couple of days. In order to survive in comfort I got to break out a new skirt from the upcycled wardrobe. Love that.

On a recent trip to my favorite thrift store I purchased an x-large man's shirt. I cut out the sleeves and neck. I held up the skirt to make sure it was the length I wanted and then cut the top (where neck was) in order to shorten the skirt. With my trusty sewing machine I took in the sides in to what I felt was a comfortable fit and put in an elastic waistband. Then ta dah! A new skirt for summer. No hemming needed as the bottom of the shirt is now the bottom of the skirt.

I have worn the skirt several times already. The youngest likes how soft it is for getting water out of his eyes (oh the fun of running in the sprinkler.)

This skirt is perfect for those days you know your hair is a bit frizzy, maybe you are feeling a tad bloated from last nights cosmos, but hey you are comfortable and ready to play!

I cannot believe how neglectful I have been of this poor little blog. We have been busy with finishing up the school year, birthdays, and starting our garden plot in the local community garden. Of course there have been crafting projects going on around here. For a quick project, the boys and I have been working on our friendship bracelets. For a fantastic HOW-TO ( in case you need a refresher...) check out the link from Honestly WTF.

My most favorite little invention is this floss winder that I found at the local craft store. Perfect for getting all that floss in order! The kiddos even helped out with all the winding we had. Love that!

The end result. A lovely rainbow of color. Hoping to have a bunch of fun bracelets to share with friends and family!

It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year

Time to start the garden! This year we are trying something a little different. There are small community garden's happening all over our town. We have decided to give one a try. We have been given 10 X 10 plot for the growing season. I have discovered that I know very little about gardening and am not expecting a high yield this year. I am, however, expecting to learn lots from the more experienced gardeners. Right now we have a couple weeks to plan and start sowing indoors if we need. Then we can start to get into our plots and let the fun begin!

I am continuing to try and bust through some stash fabric. I had a heavier cotton laying around. I thought I was going to make a bag out of it, but then a skirt sounded more fun. Using my go to skirt pattern (Amy Butler's Barcelona Skirt) I set out to make a simple skirt for spring.

. I did not make any changes to the pattern except that I did not hem the skirt. I want it to fray at the ends. The material is a natural color, why not keep it natural looking? I love the skirt, but it is still a bit to cold for skirt wearing around here. Right not the skirt sits in the closet waiting for the day when it can come out to play.

In the meantime I continue to sew and to build up that spring and summer wardrobe. It has to warm up sometime right????

Here Comes The Refashion

Last year I typed up a post on a bridesmaid dress that needed a little attention. Well, like any super fancy dress it was domed to sit in bridesmaid dress hell unless............

As I looked at the lovely print and felt the soft material, visions of a swingy summer skirt came to mind. So with a pair of sissors and some elastic I set out to refashion this dress. It will not sit in closet for years collecting dust or end up at the Goodwill donation store. No no, I have plans for you dear dress. After much cutting, sewing and measuring we had victory!

A summer skirt that works! (I have yet to find a top I love with the skirt, but hey it is still very much spring around here.) Love it! I have a feeling that this skirt is going to get lots of wear. I love its movement and the big print is perfect for the warmer months. Hurray for new life breathed into an old dress.

I Have Hope

I received the book Craft Hope for Christmas and I have been itching to find a good project to start with. After countless time flipping through the pretty pages, I went with the classic pillowcase dress. This is my first attempt and I think it turned out pretty cute. I found a nice case at the local thrift store. I loved the trim at the opening. The rest was as easy as pie, thanks to the books great instructions. I made size 6-12 mo.

The only embellishment I added were the buttons. I had them sitting around in the stash and thought they would add a little something to the dress. Kinda cute no?

This dress is on its way to Florida for my new niece. I have some other pillowcases in the stash that are now on its way to becoming dresses. I think many will be sent out for charity, but a couple may find there way as gifts. The book is amazing and full of all kinds of projects. It is inspiring and also a great way to get the kiddos included in some activities for others.

In our family, we have boys. All nephews, including my 2 contributions. There are 7 of them to be exact. So imagine my surprise when I found out I am getting a NIECE! My lovely sister in law is expecting this August and we could not be more happy. As soon as we found out, I set to work on putting a gifty box together. Along with some store bought finds I included some homemade goodies.

Embroidery is my new addiction. I checked out several books at the library including Sublime Stitching by Jenny Hart. Love it! I got my hands on some simple white onsies and went to town!

Of course not only did I get to test out some embroidery, but having a niece means I get to FINALLY try out all those super cute girlie sewing patterns out there! Will be coming in next post. Sweet Dreams Are Made Of Buckwheat?

Oh yes they are! For a few months I have been waking up with neck pain. Sometimes it was so bad, I would find myself with a pack of frozen peas on the neck. My mom suggested a new pillow, a buckwheat pillow. Well, what the heck? I would try anything at this point. So, I ordered one up from here... and after a night or two of sleeping on this unusual pillow, I feel better! I don't wake up with pain anymore. I am so happy.

The crafty gal in my could not resist making a new pillowcase for this amazing piece of sleepy goodness. It truly deserved some LOVE. Amy Butler LOVE that is. So now every night I get to rest my head on something pretty and comfortable. Hurray for new pillows and pretty fabric!

Last night I discovered I need to cover about 4 pillows in order to make my sewing room more comfy. After much tossing of fabric on pillows I ran to computer for a fresh perspective. I was on overload with all that material being tossed around. I came across my new favorite embroidery site and a whole new idea for some pillows. Sublime Stitching has some really amazing and innovative designs! I am in creative heaven. I can see some lovely pillow covers heading my way very very soon. I love that most of the patterns can be downloaded into PDF format. Instant gratification is key!

Upcycled Chic

I know that the Oscars are far over, but I am so taken with Ms Firth's dress. Her dress is from Vogue's Green Carpet Challenge and it is beautiful. The dress is eleven different dresses rolled into one beautiful gown. The sacrificed dresses come from charity/thrift/vintage shops that were in the area of The King's Speech. Every single part of this dress has been recycled, upcycled, and repurposed.

It is amazing. Honestly, is shows some real talent and creativity on behalf of designer Gary Harvey. I think I may have to add this piece to my inspiration board.

Spring Sewing Is Here!

Simplicity Pattern 4589

I am so excited to finally start sewing for spring/summer. While it is still a white cold mess outside, inside thoughts are warm and dreamy with spring weather so close to coming. I had some left over material that needed to be used. Why not make a quick top that is great for layering (hence the sweater in March) and also on it own? The brown was a silky type material. I not sure exactly what it is, but it is very light and has a nice drape. I am inspired this year by natuarl fibers like linen and light cottons. For textures I am loving those silks (and "silk-like") fabrics.

The only thing I changed on the pattern was to add the extra layer of material. This top needed a little interest and that pop of color keeps the brown from looking to much like fall. The extra band of purple at the bottom added some length. Nice for when you are 5'9" and patterns are cut for those on the shorter side. I also added slits at the bottom of the top for better movement around those hips.

I just finished up another Amy Butler skirt . Her simple a-line skirt to be more exact. It turned out super cute and I even got a chance to embroider. Pics will be coming, if it warms up a bit. I am also anxiously awaiting the arrival of my first Japanese sewing pattern book. I really want to work on sewing pintucks and this book has some lovely designs. Perfect for summer and layering pieces.

I would say that spring has sprung around here!

Round Here

Spring is knocking quietly at our back door. While we continue to battle snowfall and cold temps, March is less that 1 week away! This is the time of year when spring cleaning starts to set in. Like many people who are home/apartment dwellers, the issue of storage comes up. In an attempt to create storage and make our front room more livable, I have undertaken a new project. Friends and family are helping to upcycle some old cabinets and fashion a new desk. The walls have been freshly painted and now we begin phase 1 of operation storage. Cleaning and scrubbing out the old cabinets (rescued from the local habitat restore). Tomorrow we begin phase 2, sanding!

I cannot wait to get started painting, but all that prep work is going to be totally worth it! So, time to get a move on........

Music Monday

SNOW DAY!

Along with the rest of the world, we are snowed in. Although we are able to enjoy sunshine in the aftermath of the storm. One kiddo is under the weather, so he has been asked to keep a little more still today. The other is outside directing dad on how to snow blow the driveway. I am working on some homemade bread. Nothing makes me feel more cozy then bread in the oven. Hope everyone else is staying warm and safe during our winter weather!

He's The Doctor

You know you are a fan of a show when your kids make you a Lego figure. My oldest made me a Doctor Who Lego figure. I think he is supposed to be the 10th doctor, hence the stripy suit. I love the sonic screwdriver. That is how the kids bring joy to my life while we are in the middle of crazy home improvement stuff and family coming in from out of town.

There has been little crafty stuff going on lately. As we get closer to finishing things up around here, I hope that changes soon!!

Still Going Strong

I have been a vegan for 19 days. I have learned LOTS about cooking, nutrition, things about myself, and my family. Did you know you can be a vegan and eat nothing but foods that are still bad for you (did you know Oreo's are vegan?) I thought vegan's were all very skinny and so uber healthy. I am thankful for so many amazing cooks and blogger's out there who are keeping me well supplied with great recipes and ideas for foods (healthy options). The library has been a great resource for finding cookbooks and articles on how to eat healthy, get your recommended nutrition, and be happy.

The Mr. has surprised me by being a willing participant. While he is NOT committed to a full on vegan or vegetarian menu, he does eat what is put in front of him. He does not complain and he seems satisfied with each meal. While my kids are sticking with their kid friendly fare, my oldest has all of the sudden becoming willing to try different veggies. I am so super excited about that.

I still miss cheese. Not all cheese, just the good stuff. I also miss Nutella. In less then 2 weeks I will be able to indulge again. However, I do think there is a shift in the food force.

Had a fun trying out this embroidery thing. I made some homemade napkins to send to my younger sister. I had some linen fabric in the stash that I used for the bird. To coordinate I found some nature loving fabric at Ikea. Perfect for a Vermont family!

I know that you can see the hoop marks in the picture, but hey, that's linen. I hope they like it. I think this will lead to many more projects with embroidery. I love that little extra something it can provide.

Can Finally Show Off!

This project was sent to my sister (who lives in beautiful New Hampshire) as a Christmas gift. Now, that she and hubby have their gift and the holidays are over, I think it is safe to post now. They take these wonderful retreat vacations in Maine and I wanted to make something they could take along and enjoy. How about a nice fluffy picnic blanket?!! I used a mix of vintage sheets and pillowcases, along with some fabrics in the stash. The boys helped to put it all together. Then I picked the one simple square to embroider a little B and a saying that my sister LOVES.

The back of the blanket was thirfted. I think it was an old tablecloth. I just loved the cute print and I am such a sucker for green. It was very nature like. And that is what we are going for here, nature! When you are in Maine on vacation, you are star gazing, fishing, eating and cooking outside, and relaxing in your hammock.

I am just so happy they enjoyed it! I really had fun putting it together and thinking of them while the fabrics were being chosen. Isn't that why we love to make things? It is so fun creating and thinking of those we are creating for.

The other day I was looking through some sewing books getting some inspiration for the holidays. I finally found a winner with the book Weekend Sewing by Heather Ross. Her guest slipper pattern caught my eye. I decided to give it a whirl, although I did some modifications. I used fold over elastic and omitted the ric-rack. I have so much of the FOE in my stash, this was a great way to use some up. I also omitted the little loop in the back of the slipper. Next time I may add it, especially if gifting to others.
My favorite part is the fabric. I used napkins from World Market! That store is so full of textile goodness.

With this wearable muslin all done, there maybe many more pair showing up in the future. It was a fast and pretty simple project and there are LOTS of possibilities to really personalize and get creative with this.

Saaaay "Cheese"

Lately nothing has beat the convenience of soup. There are always leftovers to freeze and let's face it, "soup is good food". I have been experimenting with vegan friendly options on certain foods we love around here. How does one make vegan cheese broccoli soup? The solution for this comes from a friend and wonderful cook in her own right. The recipe she gave me can be found here, cheesy broccoli soup.

Who knew that cashews and nutritional yeast would make such an awesome combo?! I substituted red pepper for pimento (that was what was in the house). Otherwise I followed the rest of the recipe as written. The hubby enjoyed it also. I was very happily surprised at that. The kids were dipping there crunchy bread in their bowls and actually enjoying the cheese flavor. The best part is, the leftovers are just as tasty. You don't feel so heavy after a bowl (so one more was had by us!) I would say this was a success around here! I will be keeping this one in my cold weather rotation!

A pair of fingerless mittens are all set for the holidays. The pattern used was Susie's Reading Mitts that I found on Ravelry. While my pattern was not exact, it was very easy to knit. It was also was very fast. That is the nice thing about those fingerless mittens. The yarn I used was Berroco's Softwist. It was hanging out in the stash just waiting for the perfect time of year to become something fabulous. What I like about these for winter is you can make them nice and long to cover up any exposed skin.

These mittens are made up to give to friends this year. I love playing elf. Making the gifts and then giving them away. It is the best part of the holidays!

With the holidays in full swing, it is time to finish up all those projects! Some knitting and some sewing, even a little embroidery work. I am finishing up items for my sisters. I love to make things for them! These ladies MUST have items that are functional (and of course stylish). This is why crafting is the perfect way to make sure they get a little something that fits into their busy lives. I am thinking some kitchen goodness for ones sister and for the other sister, something for her much coveted vacations in Maine. Stay tuned.....

A Comfy Jacket 4 The Holidays

A new sewing project is all done and ready to show off. Just in time for winter. Jacket was loosely based on Burda pattern 7580. I changed up the collar and made the sides a little bigger. This allows the jacket to hug around you for warmth and it lays nice and flat with a belt. It was a very simple jacket to sew and due to the nature of the material, there is no need to hem and "finish" things. I love it!!

I found the material at a local thrift store. The fabric was brand new and I am not one to pass up a bargain. The fabric is a knit on top with a light fleece/sweatshirt feel underneath. This is perfect with skinny's and boots, skirts, and even thrown on over those lounge pants on a snowy day. So, let is snow this Thanksgiving!

Broke down and got a pair of those goofy shoes. We sell them where I work and for the longest time I just could not get on board with this crazy shoe. However, I was challenged to use a pair. Since I don't run, (knee injury) I could not figure out how I could incorporate a pair into my life. Of course Vibram thought of everything and entered the yoga market.

So, there became my challenge. I acquired a pair and put them to the test. I have to say that they perform really well. No more slipping on the mat. For hot yoga that is a nice plus. They are comfy and actually this particular style (Perfoma Jane) is kind of cute. I did not find them to hard to get into and they stay in place great.

Goes to show that maybe I need to work at keeping a more open mind about things. It was a pleasant surprise and I plan on continuing to use these crazy cuties.

Learning New Ways To Eat

Right now I am in the thralls of cheese and dairy goodness. Before we know it, the new year will be here and that means going vegan for 30 days. I am doing so much research and loving it. There are so many options and ideas. All thanks to the world of blogging and home cooks! Food has found a new appreciation. I feel like if these wonderful people can it, why not me? So inspiring.

Another favorite find is the beautiful magazine Vegetarian Living. It is from the UK and full of lovely pics and recipes. I am thinking this is going to be a very inspiring resource.

Speaking of inspiring, it is that time of year to get going on some Turkey day craft ideas with the boys. I think this week is going to be very fun.

I Heart Fall

I love fall AND I love new knits! Huzzah for a fun and finished knitting project. Fall is the perfect time for fingerless mittens. I love them. You can access anything you need without having to sacrifice some cold hands. The pattern used was by Nutty Irishman Knits, titled Juniper Mitts. Found the pattern on Ravelry. The yarn I used was something left over from the stash. It was a heavy worsted weight yarn. I cannot remember what I used!

I finished off the mittens with a fake buttonhole. My buttons were found at the thrift store (of course!). I love that they are a great neutral color. Most important, I use them all the time for running out, playing in the yard, and walking the kiddo to school with a hot cup o' coffee in hand.

The Challenge - 30 Days

You know that movie Super Size Me? Yeah, that one with with the guy who eats McD's for 30 horrendous days. I think trying something new really DOES take 30 days to make an informed decision. It gives you time to evaluate and experience the good and bad. I have decided that after the holiday crazy food fest and more research on my part, I am going to go vegan for 30 days. I NEVER thought this would even be a possibility, but there really are some amazing recipes out there, and 30 days seems like a great way to cleanse out the holiday binge. Now, I have a pretty limited meat diet anyway (only turkey, chicken, and fish). However, giving up my precious cheese is going to be very very hard. I LOVE cheese of all kinds Gruyere, Goat, Feta, Mozzarella, and soooooo much more.

I do expect that after 30 days I will be full back at full cheese strength. I don't expect this to change me to the point of running around purging my closet of leather shoes and purses. I do expect to have a more open mind, a better way to incorporate tasty vegan meals into my life, and I love a challenge of the food kind.

I am also excited that I am not going to go at it alone. No, the mister is staying in his comfort zone of meat and man food. (although he does do vegetarian on occasion). A friend is going to take this on with me. I am so happy. Someone to talk to, share recipes with, and fight the urge to sneak just a little nibble of that delicious grilled cheese the kids are having.

In the meantime I am looking forward to dinner tomorrow. Homemade french onion and fennel soup! Oh yeah baby, all that melted cheese goodness!!

Feeding The Soul

We have been taking advantage of this season to be out enjoying the city. One of my favorite events was checking out Art Prize. It was amazing! Our day started with brunch at our favorite breakfast place, Wolfgangs. After a hearty meal, we trucked all over the city checking out art in all it's wonderful forms. The kids liked all the interactive pieces including the pianos placed at random spots. We came across a fellow treating everyone to a great rendition of Imagine.

I would could fill this with pictures of the art, but best to go and check out the link. It gives you a much better idea on this event and some insight to the artists.

On a completely different note, I have been up to some crafting lately. My fingerless mitts are done and I am halfway finished with another pair! As the season takes a turn to the sun setting earlier and the days get colder I have a feeling this blog will become more active. In the meantime thanks for your patience while I took a little break and enjoyed!

Apparently I have long neglected my little blog. This month has been a busy one. Fall is a time of year that always brings about a sense of change. I use this time to take stock in life and check in with myself. I have started back up with yoga and I missed it so! My back is especially thankful for those nice deep stretches. The boys even join in for a moment or two. Mom makes a great jungle gym when she is in downward facing dog LOL!

I am in these blogs.Already Pretty and Fashion For Nerds. I love their sense of style and ideas that they offer. A mom wardrobe is a very tough thing. We feel like we must sacrifice style for comfort. There is no time to shop for ourselves. Trying things on? Are you crazy? Who has time for that. Well, I am going to try and make time! As the kiddos get older and more independent, I am slowly learning that it is okay to take some time for yourself. I love a challenge of doing it on a TIGHT budget. Thrift stores, you are my friend!

I am also working on some craft projects. The goal right now is to get through the stash of fabric and yarn. I have found this to be a very fun challenge. A couple of Christmas items are finished and that is fantastic! Will have a new post all about those projects! Hopefully soon. I am excited that I found some great fabric that make a nice fall/winter skirt. Again going back to getting out of the wardrobe rut. Fall and winter are always challenges for me in the clothing department. Summer is so much easier to sew those cute skirts and dresses. LOL!

Simple Vintage Style (and how to)

A look that is taking off like wild fire is the Half Moon Manicure. I like that it is a simple thing you can do at home. All you need is a little time in the evening after the kids go to bed. Have a talk with your cat to make sure he understands that lap time will start after the nails are dry. For a little history on this particular look check out this article. My example may not be the most authentic, but for a first time out, here is how it went.....

1. Step one, get your cuticles in check. Do a little maintenance with cuticle remover and an orange stick. Then you can either apply a clear base coat or add a color if you want a "colorful" moon. I used white. I thought a good contrast would be fun.

2. Find a guide to help you. Unless you have a very steady hand, then freestyle it! I however need all the help I can get. These are pretty inexpensive, you get lots of "guides", and they are very helpful. You can find them at any office supply store, or other store that has a decent office supply section.

3. Apply your guide strips to nail. Make sure your nails are COMPLETELY dry. These will peel off and on without taking your polish off. You will need to play around to see how big your want your moon to be. For a first timer just do the best you can. The more you try this, the more comfortable you be a finding your placement. I mean look at mine, anyone who has done this would probably have a chuckle, but we are LEARNING here! And having fun!!

4. Finally apply your color coat. Allow for it to completely dry and then remove your guides. Then apply a clear top coat. Wow, look at what you did!! Of course you can do this all sorts of ways. Be creative and play around with color. A more authentic approach would be to also have the tip of the nail the same as the bottom. Only the middle of the nail would have polish. For a beginner, I thought is was easy just to tape off the bottom and paint all the way up. As you get more skilled tape off top and bottom and rock that vintage look!

Wheatland

This past weekend our family said good-by to lazy summer days the best way we know how. The Wheatland Music Festival! It was a great time and the boys had a blast. The music was great (folk, celtic, and traditional songs). The atmosphere is wonderful, the kids were busy with making crafts and playing on the playground, checking out juggling and watching LARGE bubbles be blown. Of course we finished up the day with trip to Rosie's Diner (as seen on Diners Drive-in's and Dives). Nothing beats milkshakes after a festival!

School Days!

School has started! The oldest is in 1st grade. One may think that things may seem more relaxed around here, but that has not been the case. Actually I feel more busy and pressed for time. Why is that?? He seems to be liking school, but going all day long is a big adjustment. Next week the youngster' will start preschool. Wow! Wow! Wow!

In the meantime we were able to enjoy our final weekend before the school bell rang. Nothing like being with friends, enjoying good food, and laughing until it hurts.

I am hoping to return to a regular crafting program once things settle in. The weather has turned a little cooler and thoughts start to wander to yarn and knitting. Projects are starting to form in my head. Stay tuned!

Push and Pull

The days are starting to get noticeably shorter and there is something in the air. These past couple of weeks have been very strange ones around here. It is that back to school vibe and it puts me a push/pull mood. I want to covet these last few days with everyone at home. I want to try and get in some last minute day trips to enjoy the summer. I want to slow down and enjoy every little minute. At the same time we begin to get bombarded with appointments, open houses, and back to school shopping. The oldest is a little quicker to put on his "I'm board" routine. I have to admit the boys are ready for a little time apart. While they love each other and play well together (for the most part), they are getting tired of the same ol' thing.

My crafting has taken a bit of a backseat in order to enjoy these days a little more. My head is full of ideas, but when it comes to actual execution, well, other things just seem a little more important right now. However, I feel there will projects to share very soon!!

A Day In The City

A day in the city is always a good time. Took the train to Chicago with the family. Spent the day on Michigan Ave. at the Lego store (of course). My favorite part was just walking with looking at the amazing architecture. It was a bit of a challenge to get good pics and take the time to really admire the buildings, we had some pretty excited kiddos ready to hit the store!

I love to ride the train. The people watching is amazing! This older woman on the train sat in quiet contemplation with her devotional and rosary for a while. It was her moment of meditation, until her cell phone started to ring like crazy. I guess it is hard to escape modern life even on the train.

A Rumbly Resuce

Meet the newest addition to our family. We could not be more happy or excited to have him become part of our lives. His name is Rumble Belly or Rumbly. Why such a name? Well, this kitty purrs like he has swallowed a V-10 engine. It is fantastic. Also, he came to us weighing around 15 lbs.

This summer we searched all the rescue shelters looking for our new pet. Then we saw this guy up in the very top cage at the West Olive Humane Society. I think it was love at first sight. We spent some time with him at the shelter and he did great with the kids. He is 5yrs. old and a mellow jello kind of guy.

It was a good experience for all of us. The folks at the humane society were so nice and very helpful. It tugged at your heart to see all these animals in need of good homes. It was a great opportunity to talk to the boys about responsibility and loving your pet for the rest of its life. It is hard thing to wrap your head around for an adult let alone a child. However, happy faces prevailed when we found our "brother".

Hooked On The Laundry Line

We are now living life on the line. The laundry line that is. I went looking all over for a retractable laundry line and could not find one. I was starting to get a bit frustrated at not being able to find something so simple. Once again my mom came through and happened to find one at her local hardware store. Hubby J. helped me to get it up and running. We are now enjoying our sheets being line dried in the sunshine. LOVE IT! Hoping that it gives the kids a great sensory memory. That wonderful smell of clean sheets on the line.
Of course one is not limited to sheets.

So far I have had shirts, skirts, and a favorite tablecloths! I also cannot get over how quickly things dry in the sun. It is amazing.

Cute As A Button - A Tutorial

Over the weekend we headed out the local artisans market. In between all the eye candy and a purchase or two I saw an artist who was doing the cutest things with buttons. Her rings were adorable, I thought maybe I could try making something similar at home. Off to grandma's button box I went and came up with my button ring tutorial. This is my first tutorial, so if things are unclear or don't make sense I apologize!!!

Items Needed:

1/4" elastic (color your choice) - this is the band of the ring.

Buttons of your choice

Favorite craft adhesive (I used good ol' crazy glue)

Next measure the elastic around the finger of your choosing. Allow for a little extra as you will be gluing the ends to the button. When you think you have the right fit, cut. Of course if you know your ring measurements, that is always helpful!

Now the fun part!! Play with your buttons and see what ring you can come up with. I think it is fun to stack them, but you have a really funky or brilliant button that stands out on its own, show it off!!

*if you are stacking your buttons please glue these first. When dry, start to glue the elastic.
Apply glue to one end of elastic and stick to bottom button. Allow to dry or get to a point where it won't move around much. Then bring the other end around to form the band and glue on the opposite side.

This is the hard part. LET IT DRY. I know it is sitting there looking cute and finished. The urge to try it on, "just to see" is strong. You must resist.

When the glue is dry you can FINALLY rock your new ring. HURRAY!!

Blueberry Fields Forever

A summer must here in Michigan is blueberry picking. The berries are large, sweet, and juicy. We pick plenty to enjoy now and then some to freeze for later. There is nothing like pulling out some berries in the middle of winter and baking some muffins. After our hard labor, we rewarded ourselves with some blueberry ice cream!

Last week I looked around my closet and felt like it could use a little spruce up. Those summer tees has lost some luster. I love the Built By Wendy patterns from Simplicity. This pattern is so simple and quick. It should be a staple in anyone's sewing pattern collection. The pattern is number 3835. I really would like to try making the tunic "dress" (for me it would be top). I think it would be fun this fall. Anyway, I had some green chambray fabric laying around and thought that would be perfect for a summer day. So with a seam here and there, presto!! New shirt!! Thank goodness for stash fabric and a nice simple pattern. May the summer fun continue on!

The Boys Of Summer

This past weekend was very busy with a big family wedding. I am so sad at the lack of picture taking on my part. We were so busy with both J. and myself being in the wedding. On the day of the ceremony I did manage to grab a picture of the boys. Everyone had a fun weekend, but we were exhausted on the final day.

Now that we are back home, things are coming together. It is a slow process, but getting back to cooking and off the road food has been a great start. For lunch yesterday I had tomatoes and basil from the garden. There was real mozzarella cheese in the fridge to add, YEAH!! Simple and so very satisfying.

Time Out!

I am shaking things up in a personal way this summer. In a good way (I think). Life has been moving at the speed of light and things are always on fast forward. In order to take some time out for myself and really grow a little I have joined a meditation group. This is a little out of my box, which is great. I am trying to make a more conscience effort to try new things even if it scares me a little.

The idea of mediation has always appealed to me. But who has the time??!!! Ha Ha. I am making time starting out once a week. Of course I needed (and still do) some instruction. So I went to class and became the newbie. I learned that this is indeed a practice. It is ongoing, but hey isn't that what self discovery is all about? I love the people in the group. They come from all walks of life, all ages, all different religious backgrounds. As a newbie I am just happy to sit and practice. To learn what is truly important and what is not, what drains us vs. what nourishes us. Ahhhh simplicity.

Crazy Daze

First off, I DID manage to get some sewing done this past week! I am feeling much better about that. Of course most of it was spent working on the bridesmaid dress. About 4 inches had to be taken off the bottom and a new hem made. The dress is lined, so that means everything must be done twice. Even with mom's help, it still took awhile!

The Hem

One of my favorite projects that I was able to finish was get these vintage curtains up. I had to put the seam in so they could be hung on the bar. LOVE these. Another fab. gift from my mom. She knows me so well, LOL!

This weekend is the wedding and then we slow down a little around here. That means a little less crazy and a little more fun!

A Declaration Of Craft

Whew, this past weekend of celebrating independence (4th of July) and enjoying the extra long weekend has finally put me in a crafty mood. We have played in the sun, sand, stayed up late to watch fireworks, chased lighting bugs, ate junk food, and even took naps. It was fantastic, but now I am longing for my craft room.

I am declaring it a craft week around here. I am so far behind in sewing it is just crazy, and my knitting? Well, forget it, what knitting!! That is just unacceptable! One of the things on tap this week is to hem my bridesmaid dress (not very exciting stuff, but it has to get done). Also I have some knit fabric that is just calling out to be made into something comfortable. There are also some cushions that need to be made for our metal glider. I would also like to cast on for this lovely cowl. It is never to late to start knitting for the fall. Of course there are ALWAYS mittens to be made. I think the Reading Mitts are in order as well. They are to adorable! There are crafts for the kids to do as well. Hope to have some progress done in the next couple of days. In the meantime I need to get off this electronic time suckage device and get going!!

We are busy enjoying the summer. That is the reason for the lack of posting. Currently we have a little landscaping job going on. It has been so much fun digging in the dirt and our friends and family have been so generous donating plants. (Learning that folks are very happy to divide and share hostas and ferns). I have seen so many wonderful ideas on how to enjoy your backyard. It really does not take much to make your green space enjoyable and inviting. There is still LOTS to do back there, but we are on our way. Can't wait!

An Adventure To Remember

Our first camping trip out this year was very adventurous. On our first night at the site we had to survive an impending thunderstorm. While we went out for dinner (and to stay dry during the storm) our tent came out of the stakes and flew up a tree. Tents DO FLY! Our nice camping neighbors grabbed our tent and held it down with the picnic table while we were out. One thing about camping is everyone is always looking out for each other, it is so wonderful!! We were fortunate that my mom lives close by and we were able to bunk with her during the night.
We made day trips to the camp site and where we were still able to enjoy good camp cooking, fires, the beach, and all the other things that camping has to offer. Just not staying in the tent. LOL!

All these bright happy colors AND it makes ice cream?!! Love it! Found these over at The Kitchen (Apartment Therapy). I think this appliance pretty much defines summer.

Speaking of summer, we are heading out for our first camping trip! Can't wait. Fingers crossed for good weather this weekend. Also hoping that hubby and I survive putting our first family sized tent together. This thing is a monster, but promises for lots of room for the boys and "indoor" eating (We live in a very buggy and temperamental weather state).

Learning Continues...

The official school year may have ended last week, but we like to keep things going. It just may seem more fun because you are not in the classroom. This would be our version of music class. We took the boys to the park where one of our favorite Michigan bands was playing a free concert. The Ragbirds are a band from Ann Arbor who have a folk/world music feel. You gotta love it when your kiddos get to see lots of different instruments and get to dance in the grass.

There was also our version of gym class. There was a particular hill that they found fun to run and roll up and down, up and down, it was pretty funny. I let them each have a turn with the camera. A little bit of technology and art class for them. Their work is featured below....

Trying New Things

Once again I owe this adventure to the SouleMama (a.k.a. Amanda). Her post on The Laundry Line was very inspiring. I have taken her recipe on how to make your own laundry soap and tried it out. It was very easy to find everything and my favorite part was picking out what Dr. Bronner's soap to use.

All kinds of questions ran through my head. Will it really work? Will it leave a residue behind? Will it smell? My concerns were all put to rest right after the first load. The smell was very subtle ( I think due to an error on my part, need more castile soap next time!) Everything is coming out clean. It is fantastic. For really tough stains, I am trying vinegar. I am keeping a spray bottle in the laundry room to have on hand.

My next project is to get a clothes line for the backyard. I just need to get out and get it. Oh, and I also need to finish a little landscaping project that we have going on. That would give me some space for the line. Hoping very very soon to have that under control!! In the meantime, I am enjoying this new adventure in to a chemical free, cheaper, and fun way to do laundry.

How about a blanket for summer picnics, playing, beaches, camping?? Right now, I am thinking there is nothing better. This blanket comes right from the book Handmade Home By Amanda Soule (of SouleMama). Used bits of old pillowcases and sheets, along with new material that I had in the stash. I then found an old chenille bedspread to use for the back. My favorite part of the blanket is that I was able to incorporate pillowcases from my childhood. I love that! I can totally see making a couple more of these.

The family already has plans to use this blanket. I honestly can't wait. Finally feeling like summer is here!

Summer Sewing Has Begun!

It may only be the end of May, but if feels like summer around here! Highs are in the 90's and the boys are running in the sprinkler to cool off. Salads, lemonade, and cool treats are in hand. Crafting has taken a back seat to things like yard work, planting, birthday parties, and end of the school year activities.

However, I have finally finished a tunic shirt for summer! Love the fabric. It is a cotton lawn. Although it can show wrinkles (see picture), the comfort factor wins. This fabric is sooooo light weight, it calls, no screams to made into something light and a bit boho. The pattern was Simplicity 2586 ( Cynthia Rowley ). It was pretty easy, the only modification I made was on the arm hole. I used FOE (fold over elastic) rather than a finished sleeve. I love that idea and it very comfortable (and forgiving!). I think I will that method again on my next top. I can another one of these making its way into the summer wardrobe. Yes indeed.

I am a Fool for dessert!

I have found summer in a bowl. Yesterday there was a quick trip to the farmers market for some rhubarb. The market was small as it is early here in Michigan, but the rhubarb looked great. Then home to make the rhubarb dessert from the book Rustic Fruit Desserts.

Can I just tell you that it is my new favorite thing for warm weather. How can one NOT want fresh fruits (I know that rhubarb is technically a veggie, but go with me here) mixed with real homemade cream??!! I added some left over strawberries as well. It is super easy to make. It would also be easy to substitute whatever fresh fruit is in season. You can enjoy this all summer long!!

I am not sure what has sparked the need to journal. Maybe it is being surrounded by such creative moms, both in life and in cyber world. Maybe it is watching the boys grow so fast, I want to capture every moment. Maybe I wish I could remember all those "ideas" I had about crafts to do with the kids. Something to put paper scraps, material scraps in and remember those projects. I am wondering if I want a small one to carry with me for "on the go" moments and then something larger for at home. While I ponder this idea, I am enjoying a little time on Etsy looking at the wonderful journals out there!! So many beautiful ones to choose from!

At It Again!

In September I will at it again. I am racing for the cure, but this year is different. My sisters best friend has been diagnosed with breast cancer. She (friend not sister) is 31 yrs. old, a wife, and mother of 4 beautiful kids. Lynette is an amazing person who has been part of my sister's world since they were kids. Our whole family has been effected. Right now we are in limbo waiting for results, but the news so far has been a little alarming. 11 of her 17 lymph nodes they took had cancer. We are still waiting for results from more tests and continue to be hopeful and positive. She is strong, surrounded by strong family, friends, and her community.

For the race I am part of Team Bell. Being part of a team is new for me. It feels good to be part of something and share this with others. My sister won't be able to take part in the race this year. She is due in August with her 4th baby boy (can't wait)! Also she lives in Vermont, so I am going to race for her as well as myself. Last year the race was such a positive and moving experience. I think this next race will be more so. Off to get ready........

This year it is getting very personal.

A little time away

No, we did not go out on a vacation or holiday. We stayed put, however our little home was invaded by family and some fun. So, any crafting was put on hold for a bit. Now that everyone is gone back to their homes, we are slowly returning back to the daily routine of things. The only crafty news I have is that the picnic blanket top is finished. I am waiting for the back to come in the mail.

Mother's Day was a good day. The boys were very sweet with breakfast, lots of hugs and kisses, a day to shop, and dinner at my moms. One of my favorite splurges was on some Liberty Of London flips. If you sew, then you know how great it was to have Liberty at Target for a bit!!

These are very comfy and I think the print is pretty fun for summer. Hope to be back to more regular posting schedule!

The Freezer Paper Experiement

Over at Cheri's blog, she has lots of fun and crafty ideas. One of her most popular crafts is to use freezer paper and stencil on a cool design to a kids shirt or pants. Her projects always look so cool and modern. I thought why not give it a whirl with my own boys and see how it goes.....

The actual project is pretty easy! (tutorial here) I think I might need to use a different brush to get a more solid look, but overall I think the shirt turned out pretty cute.

Of course getting your 3 yr. old to stay still for a picture is something else of a challenge! The shirt was pretty simple, maybe next time we could add some embellishments or words. If you want to be inspired check out the flickr group!! Seriously puts mine to shame, but hoping with more practice they start to look better and better!

The other day the kids and I went to our library to see what we could see. In all the wonderful stacks of books I came across Handmade Home by Amanda Blake Soule. I cannot tell you how much I love this book. There is such a great mix of things to do with the kids, for kids, for others, for yourself. Fantastic. The best part is that you use what you have, what you thrift, what you find.

I am thinking that a paper mache bowl for the boys to keep all those spare Lego pieces in would be good. Those little bits wander ALL over house. There is a wonderful beach blanket that I have my eye on making as well. Actually, there is much I have my eye on. Rather than try and cram it into the time allowed by the library, a book purchase maybe in order. Isn't that the beauty of trying out craft books from your local library?! If you love a book, just maybe it works its way into your home permanently.

An Upcycle Project For Earth Day

I LOVE this project. It took me just a couple of hours to make. I forgot to take a picture of the "before" shirt, sorry! Anyway, here is the finished project.

The Lined Pouch

April's sewing project is all done!! YEAH!! This month the challenge was to sew something lined. Indeed it was a challenge. I have an aversion to things lined. Not sure why this is. All those cute bags, a very pretty skirt, and other endless possibilities are found with a lining. My thinking was to sew something small. The idea of a lined pouch sounded appealing Not so scary, right?? You can use material that is lying around, and there are LOTS of great tutorials out there. I used the tutorial found on tweleve22.

I am finding that with the warmer weather coming, Ric Rac is catching my eye more and more. Thought this would be a fun project to try it out.

Of course here is a picture of what this project is all about, the lining. Not the best job, nor is it a perfect fit. Just happy that I did it and it IS functional!

Now that I have one done, I would not be so scared to try another. Might be good to have a couple of these handy for summer. Cheers!!

A long lost friend

It has been such a long time since I have posted anything about knitting. My world has been full of sewing and crafty things going on with the kids. I understand the natural ebb and flow of these things. The spurts of knitting then sewing then knitting then sewing. Maybe it is time to pick up the needles again. While I am STILL working on these for my hubby, something of a quick knit is on order. I think that Shroom maybe the answer. A way to get into the stash, create something quick, cute, and have some fiber therapy at the same time. Right now I am loving Que Sera out right now on Knitty.

How cute is that sweater??!! Of course I LOVE the entire outfit. The sweater is MUCH more of a challenge and I think when I am back in full knitting mode, it maybe a possibility. In the meantime, I will start slow with quick projects, try to finish up what is on the needles now, and get those sewing projects done. Sounds like a crafty house cleaning project?!

Making Quick Use Of An Old Sheet

I am going to confess that I am huge fan of sleeping in long night gowns or skirts. I LOVE to curl up my feet underneath while relaxing. It is like a blanket, but not so heavy. Perfect for reading, watching t.v. or knitting. This past week I was checking out the local thrift stores and found a sheet that was so soft and inviting. It is the perfect weight for this fantastic spring weather we are having. While the print was not my favorite, the feel won me over. I took it home, gave it a wash, and sat down at the serger.

While making a sleep skirt, it must be long enough for curl up in and allow for lots of movement. I like mine at the tops of my feet.

The skirt consisted of two side seams, the waistband (which was just a simple elastic one) and finishing off the hem. I just surged the hem to keep it simple. In fact I just surged the entire skirt. Of course that is not necessary.

Then voila, the skirt is done and ready to relax in. I was able to finish reading The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo in total comfort! This particular sheet had a bit of flannel feel to it. I might be on the lookout for something more crisp and with a high thread count for the hot summer days.

You just never know what a trip to the thrift store will bring. Of course other treasures were found, but that is for another post!

The month of April brings about a new sewing challenge. Something lined. I have been thinking this over for some time now. I am still not sure on what exactly to sew. A skirt? a bag? Spring Break.....

Running in the sprinkler, eating icy pops, tank tops, sunny lazy days. This is NOT summer, this has been our APRIL weather for last couple of days!! We are kicking off spring break here and it is in the low 80's. A bit unusual for Michigan I would say. We are trying to take full advantage. Yesterday we had a picnic in the backyard which has once again inspired me to make this quilt. Over at Sew Mama Sew you can find instructions for this simple picnic blanket with rock pockets.

We are also working on a project that comes from the always entertaining blog, MADE . We are working on the peeps project for Easter. My mom has a tree (well actually it is a rather large branch) that she decorates with the holidays. So the boys have chosen to help decorate this years celebration with the bunnies.

Our future bunnies are awaiting the finishing touches! So far no pink, but maybe mom will step in and make her own pink peep bunnies.

And finally, we cannon enjoy the warm weather without a little hooping in the yard. The oldest is getting MUCH better and enjoys hooping more this year. Had a little re-tape party with the boys. Finished one hoop and then took it out for a test drive.

Here is to more fun in the sun while it lasts. I hear that it won't. In the meantime, we will enjoy the sun, sip refreshing beverages, eat from the grill, and enjoy!

Much Goings Ons.....

The house has had a busy buzz feeling these last few days. The weather is getting warmer (maybe 70's this week!!) and spring has sprung. One thing we like to stop and enjoy with the kids is on Sunday night watching the new series, LIFE on Discovery. The show brings back memories of my childgood. My sister and I would watch the animals on Discovery or Wild Kingdom. Then we go off into our imaginary worlds and play "animals". We were snakes, lions, polar bears, pandas, sharks. Silly, but fun. Of course our shows never looked as beautiful. The images for LIFE are truly amazing and almost the entire time, I ask "How did they film that?!"

It was so great to watch the boys enjoy some of the same experiences. They thought the Venus Fly Trap was cool. Then one of the boys (or one of us parents) would become the fly trap and the boy(s) would be the fly. We would have to catch them and hold them. These fly's usually would escape. Last night my oldest said something that is always wonderful for a parent to hear. We asked the boys if a certain scene was to scary or intense (Hyenas Vs. Lions), and my oldest says "No mom, I want to learn something new". Awesome!!!

3 Little Birds

The softie project is done! I went in a very different direction. I still made birds, but I used a different pattern. These three lovely birds are from a pattern found on Spool Sewing. Although I did not make the mobile, these birds are headed off to be with my new nephew and his little brother. My sister is a fan of birds and nature,so I thought these suited her styleI did not put any eyes on them, I just kept them plain. I was not sure what "mom" would want or not want on them. So in the interest of safety and keeps it simple, the birds have not been embellished. On my next go with these, it would be fun to experiment a little with some felt or embroidery. I loved this as a stash busting experiment. It always feels good to get some scarps used up. Now it is time for these three to fly this house and onto another!

New Life

I am feeling the need to do a little planting. The snow is finally all gone and thoughts of sprouts and things growing out of the ground. I think I will start with something inside the house. Some grass maybe? A crocus? I am not sure yet. I love the idea of the moss planter over at Sweet Paul!

Perhaps some herbs might just be the ticket. How fantastic would it be to just walk to the window and pick what you need. You would also have that added bonus of those fantastic smells.

There is much to ponder this week as the temps and sunshine tell us that it is time to come out of hibernation.

Fluffy Goodness

I am such a joiner. It seems like all the cool kids are making their own marshmallows today. This is with good reason, they are amazing!! Any packaged marshmallows in the house are usually for kids only. After reading about the joy and YUMMY homemade marshmallows, I figured, why not try it?? So try I did. Using the recipe found the always delicious blog Smitten Kitchen. I went into the kitchen and began.

Boiling the sugar was the most scary for me. I did NOT want to mess that up!

Of course one wants to be very careful when pouring that hot sugar onto the gelatin. Yikes!

All set to chill in the fridge. They boys were very good at checking on the pan to see how things were progressing.

Thinking Softie

The project for March is to sew a softie. Believe it or not, this very simple and small project is intimidating to me. I don't know why, I just really don't want to mess this up. The fantastically creative LollyChops has inspired me to create my own owl. Look how cute her little guys is! (above picture is hers!) The project seems straight forward,simple, and I am hoping to send these guys off to my 14mo.old nephew and his soon to be sibling. We are waiting to see if said sibling is going to be a girl or a boy. In the meantime, I am taking a deep breath and plunging into the softie world. THIS is the very reason why I am doing this challenge. Time to get out of the comfort zone and try new things. So onward and upward.

When Am I Going To Learn??

I need to remember to bring an actual camera to a concert! The cell phone just does not cut it. Anyway, had a rejuvenating and fun mom night out. Had great tapas from San Chez along with a pitcher of sangria to share with friends. Then onto the show to see John Mayer. Had no idea what to expect, but he did great!! He went off on a couple of amazing jam sessions! The man can seriously play the guitar. Now, if we could just get him to stop talking to the media and that "put foot in mouth disease"....... Anyway, here come the bad cell phone pics!

Friday Fun

Yesterday I happily went over to our local library where I picked up the sewing book Seams To Me by Anna Maria Horner. It is FULL of beautiful pictures using her beautiful fabrics. What I love about the book is that there is LOTS of instruction. A good book for a beginner! Some of the projects in her book that look like fun might be.......
Basket Case pillowcase, the smock top, pincushion caddy, any of the aprons, the taxi tote.

February Knits!

February presented a sewing challenge in the world of knits. Knit fabric can be very fun and very scary. We love its comfort and easy care, however on the sewing machine, it can be a nightmare! I am happy to say that I have survived and even enjoyed this easy, simple structured knit project. The pattern was Burda 7866 . Super simple pattern with few pieces to sew. I fell in love with the color of this fabric. The knit was a bamboo with 2% Lycra. The Lycra has some memory to it, so wash and wear is fantastic. Nice pattern for a beginning sewer or for a quick project to build on a wardrobe. The next knit project? I am thinking a pair of bamboo pajama pants would be oh so fantastic for summer!!!

On Tap This Week

With the Olympics in full swing I am ready to sit down in my sewing room and get busy! My knit project this month is going to be Burda pattern 7866. I found a fabulous bamboo knit last night in a lovely shade of blue/green. The pattern seems simple and I think it will make a great spring top. My plan tonight is to at least get all the cutting finished and maybe some seams sewn. There will be distractions of speed skaters, snowboarders, ice skaters, and the like, but if things get to tense, I can put that energy into sewing. Can't wait to get started!

Quick Knit For A Friend

I love the yarn from Yarn Hollow. How lucky to live in the same town as her. A while ago I purchased some of her yarn at a local yarn shop. The colors were bright, the yarn was soft, but I was not sure what I was going to use it for. Then it hit me, the fun, fast pattern Toasty by Leslie Friend would be great. To really motivate things I decided to gift the mitts to a friend. Needless to say, the mittens are off at their new home and they went over great! Love it when that happens!! With this project done, I can refocus on some sewing projects. February is fading fast and I have a knit sewing project to finish!!

While getting up to par in Twitter world (yes, I know, but I have to stay in touch with all these crafty things somehow!) I was so excited to check out the MADE blog. For the entire month of February they are rocking all things for boys! As a mom of 2 young lads, (no girls) I am so excited. I miss out on making pillow case dresses, tutu's, headbands, hair clips, leggings, and all kinds of stuff. It has only been two days and I love what they have! Rae has a great idea of making a button down shirt for boys from a man's shirt!! Love the whole recycle thing! So check it out and be inspired!

Knits and Knits

Happy February!!

January was a very full month. February is looking to be the same, minus the home paint project. For this months sewing project we have to use knit fabric. I have a few ideas and patterns already in my stash. I am in the hunt for some fun material. Lots of ideas floating in my head. Some new p.j.'s? A nice summer shirt or tank?? I will continue to research and ponder this for a couple of days and then hopefully begin soon!

I am also ready to finish a knitting project that has been put on hold due to all this sewing and painting. I have some yarn from Yarn Hollow (who happens to live in the same town!) which is so very soft and pretty. To show off those colors I have been using the fun pattern toasty. The goal is to have that done in the next week or so. The cold Michigan weather is very motiving.

So, here is to a new month, new crafty adventures, and fun experiences!

January Sewing Is Done!

I finally finished the dress. In plenty of time to wear to grandma's 90th birthday party!! I promise to have MUCH better pics of the dress at a later date. In the meantime, you will have to settle on what I could do, while two little rug rats took turns playing fashion photographer.

Now, onto the deatails. I used simplicity pattern 2925 view A. It was a pretty easy pattern to follow. I did leave out the ties but may add them on later. I also changed up the neckline just a little. I made bias tape out of the material I was using and decided to use that on the neckline instead. Otherwise everything went as written. The material was a drapy blend of rayon with 2% spandex for some stretch. Love a little give in a dress. So nice when sitting. I have stated before and I will say it again. A mom must have pockets! They come in handy when you least expect it.

Overall I like how it came out. It would make a VERY comfortable dress if done in a more casual fabric. Could see another one of these or a little different version being made in the future. Will try and post pics from the party and of the entire outfit put together.

I Think I Can, I Think I Can.....

I am so close to finishing my dress!! The neckline is giving me a bit of fits. Hope to remedy that today. Then it is just a hem and away we go. So far the fit is good and I love the material. The goal is finish this up and get pics taken before the big paint project begins. Sewing room is being transformed this weekend!! Fresh paint and a cleaned up room is going to make a world of difference. In the meantime, first things are first....the dress.

Simple Yet Effective

If you have not checked out the fantastic SwissMiss blog, then you really must! Her site is full of things to make you smile and enjoy. While hanging out on her site, she led me to Matt Brown and his fun ideas. His simple idea for kids and parents is fantastic. I know that the lower pocket would have come in handy for all those rocks, acorns, and other treasures that are found and NEED to be taken home. Sometimes the most simple ideas seem to be the most brillant.

A Small Step

In January one gets the itch to spruce things up around the home. The holiday decorations are coming down anyway, so why not change things around. The hope next weekend to start a painting project in the upstairs. In the meantime, I had the urge for something small, quick, and super simple. How about a new runner for the kitchen hutch?? Yes, a good start! I had a little Joel Dewberry fabric that was begging to be made into something. The colors go well with the hutch, I think.
I think I really like how it turned out. It is keeping me motivated to keep working on things around here. Of course I will have to remind myself of that next week as we prep to have the upstairs painted. I can't wait. It is going to be my own sewing space!! How exciting!

Taking The Challenge

This year I am all about a good challenge. I am feeling a little stuck in rut with sewing the same things over and over again. I am need of some direction and a little accountability. I have decided to take the sewing challenge that is happening over on Carolyn's blog, Each month brings about a new challenge. You can participate as often or as little as you like. January is a nice start to the year. You must sew something for yourself!! So what to sew??

My grandmother is turning 90 early in February!!! How awesome is that! She still swims and volunteers AND is a sewer! We are having a family celebration and I think a little something to wear to the party would be a great project. I have a couple of ideas, but a trip to the local fabric shop is in order as my stash has been reduced some. Stay tuned to see what ideas and creations come about this year!

Yesterday a friend of mine introduced me a wonderful children's book. The book is Martin's Big Words by Doreen Rappaport. The illustrations are BEAUTIFULLY by Bryan Collier. I quickly placed an order to have this little gem in our hands and reading soon. What I love about this book are the vibrant images and the text varies in size. It gives some Dr. Kings famous quotes or "biggest words" a larger font. Such as "You Are As Good As Anyone". Although I did not have the book for MLK day, is never to late to teach our kids about those in history who we admire and were a force for change.

Light Looking

Today the sun was shining on a bright January day. Sun in January, nothing puts a smile on a Michiganders face more! While the temps were still chilly (hovering around 30), I looked up in the car and smiled at the warm sun on my face. So a quick snap of a picture and now my moment is here for me to enjoy. In a week were news has been grave with Haiti, hubby's grandma in and out of the hospital, friends father's sudden death, this one day was so much appreciated and enjoyed. Giving thanks for the little things today!

While trolling around blogs looking for some creative ideas, I came across this free tutorial from Anna's blog Noodlehead.

How cute is this idea?!!! What a great way to reuse those old cargos. I am pretty sure in a house full of boys I can find a pair somewhere that has been hiding in the back of the closet. What a great book bag. The idea of a nice long strap is so appealing and kid friendly. Ya gotta have those hands free! I am going to give this project some serious thought!!!
